Nicaragua: Elecciones 2021: Un plan doloso para acabar con la democracia

The eighth report of the Nicaraguan citizen observatory Urnas Abiertas, published with International IDEA, covers monitoring from October 2020 to September 2021 and concludes that the integrity of the process was compromised and that the 7 November elections lacked legitimacy. It records 1,513 acts of political violence in the electoral context between 1 October 2020 and 15 September 2021, the cancellation of three opposition parties and the detention of seven presidential aspirants, a 2021 electoral register of 4,478,334 against 5,095,747 in 2017, and the removal of more than 1,100 of the 4,300 voting centres used in 2017, about one in four. From the trend since 1990 and an assumed natural increase of at least 100,000 voters a year, it argues that the register should have held about 5.5 million names and that roughly a million voters, close to 20 per cent of the electorate, are therefore missing; it states that the CSE has given no reason for the change and has refused access to the register for verification. The report is dated 27 October 2021, before the vote, and contains no election-day turnout estimate.
