Zambia President Hichilema has been reelected for a second term

Associated Press · August 18, 2026

The agency report of the declaration, filed at 22:26 US Eastern time on 17 August 2026, which was 18 August in Lusaka, records Electoral Commission of Zambia chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis announcing that Hakainde Hichilema polled 2,965,326 votes and Brian Mundubile 1,856,217, and declaring 'Hichilema Hakainde S, to be president-elect of the Republic of Zambia this 18th day of August, 2026'. It gives the shares as about 61.4 and 38 per cent, records that about 5 million votes were cast, and reports that counting had been suspended on the day after the 13 August poll, resuming hours later under increased security after the commission cited attacks on polling officials and stolen ballot papers. It also reports Mundubile's statement that his home had been raided by police, which he described as an attack on his life.
