Inquiry into the 2023 General Election
Justice Committee, New Zealand House of Representatives · November 2024
The Justice Committee's statutory review of the 2023 election, presented by chairperson James Meager, records 2,884,111 votes cast, 78.2% turnout of enrolled electors (against 82.2% in 2020), 94.7% enrolment of eligible electors, 68% turnout in the Maori electorates, 1,762,490 advance votes (61%) and 602,488 special votes (21% of all votes, against 17% in 2017 and 2020). It reviews the counting errors and the Auditor-General's findings, notes that the three judicial recounts changed no result, examines the Port Waikato by-election that followed a candidate's death and the extra list seat it produced, and records that the Commission received two complaints under section 199A (false statements to influence voters), neither requiring further action.
