Election FAQs: Guatemala 2023 Presidential Election Runoff, August 20, 2023

Records 9,361,068 registered voters (5,067,859 women and 4,293,209 men) for the 20 August run-off, 3,481 polling stations in Guatemala and 17 in the United States, and 24,585 vote reception boards counting manually from 6 p.m. before tally sheets are scanned to the TSE preliminary results centre; article 245 of the Electoral and Political Parties Law requires final official results within eight days. It states that first-round turnout was 59.8 per cent and that of 4,212,460 valid presidential votes Torres won 888,924 (21.1 per cent) and Arevalo 653,486. It also sets out that police and active-duty armed forces members may not vote, that Congress has 160 seats with 128 in 23 multi-member districts and 32 on a national list under closed-list proportional representation, and that Decree 26-2016 opened presidential voting to Guatemalans abroad, first exercised in 2019.
