Zambia: Opposition member shot and killed: Mutotwe Kafwaya

Amnesty International's urgent action, index AFR 63/1398/2026, records that Mutotwe Kafwaya, a former cabinet minister and member of the opposition Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance, was shot and killed in Lusaka on 14 August 2026 during a state security operation, the day after the general election, and that the authorities did not confirm his death until 19 August, leaving his family without official information for five days. It calls on Zambia to conduct a prompt, independent, impartial, transparent and effective investigation and to bring any suspects to trial.
