Nicaragua in Brief: Political Developments and U.S. Policy (R46860)

Congressional Research Service · June 3, 2022

The report, updated 3 June 2022, records that Nicaragua's Supreme Electoral Council said that, with almost all ballots counted, Ortega and Murillo had won over 75 per cent of the vote and turnout was 65 per cent, while a Nicaraguan opposition group it names as Open Ballot Boxes (Urnas Abiertas), which had 1,450 monitors trying to observe the elections, estimated turnout at approximately 18 per cent. It also cites a Cid Gallup survey published a week before the vote in which 76 per cent of respondents said an Ortega re-election would be illegitimate, and records that the National Coalition had called for a boycott in October 2021.
