African Union Election Observation Mission to the 29 May 2024 General Elections in the Republic of South Africa: Final Report

The African Union mission, led by former Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta and deployed from 21 May to 3 June 2024, concluded that the elections were professionally organised and conducted in an orderly, peaceful and free atmosphere. It records turnout of 58.64%, the lowest in thirty years of democratic elections, more than 212,000 spoiled ballots, and the National Assembly outcome as ANC 40.18% and 159 seats, DA 21.81% and 87, MK 14.58% and 58, EFF 9.52% and 39, IFP 3.85% and 17. It also documents malfunctioning voter management devices, long queues, at least 10 authorised edit windows and 24 recounts during tallying, 579 objections and complaints received before the result was finalised, and the failure of all 11 independent candidates to win a seat, the best-placed polling about 12,000 votes.
