Preliminary Statement: African Union Election Observation Mission, 9 October 2024 General Elections in the Republic of Mozambique

African Union Election Observation Mission · October 11, 2024

The African Union mission, led by former Angolan vice-president Bornito de Sousa with 42 short-term observers from 20 member states, visited 265 polling stations in nine provinces and found that 88.9 per cent of the 18 stations where it observed opening procedures opened on time and that counting proceeded without major issues, with observers and candidate delegates given copies of results sheets. It concluded that Mozambicans voted in a peaceful and orderly manner and that the process was held in accordance with the electoral law and fundamental rights and freedoms, while noting that 22 per cent of observed stations were not easily accessible to persons with disabilities and that its findings were preliminary.
