OAS Mission Expresses Deep Concern about Actions of the Public Prosecutor's Office against the Integrity of Electoral Material in Guatemala

Organization of American States Electoral Observation Mission · September 12, 2023

Responding to the Public Prosecutor's raid that day on the Centre of Operations of the Electoral Process where electoral material was held, the mission states that under article 243 of the Electoral and Political Parties Law only the TSE and the departmental electoral boards may verify and qualify electoral documentation, and that the opening of electoral packages by others is an attack on the integrity of the vote. It reports that the mission analysed the findings underlying the alleged irregularities in both rounds and verified that they are unfounded: there is no evidence that the yellow copies of Document Number 4 transmitted from voting centres in the first round were altered, and the very isolated errors found in the tally sheets in both rounds did not alter the order of preferences, against a second-round margin of more than 20 percentage points and almost 875,000 votes.
