ACG Election Observation Mission, South Africa 2024: Preliminary Statement

African Centre for Governance (ACG) · May 30, 2024

A pan-African civil society mission of 65 observers from eight countries, accredited by the Electoral Commission, reported delays in the opening of some voting stations, voter management devices that were largely offline, and inadequate polling material at some stations that pushed voting late into the night, alongside a calm and orderly environment and professional conduct by commission staff. It concluded that these logistical problems did not make the election fall short of regional and international standards, noted that questions about the credibility of the Electoral Commission were raised by some political parties for the first time, and recorded low participation by domestic observers inside polling stations.
