Electoral Commission 2024 National and Provincial Elections Report

Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) · 2025

The Electoral Commission's own account of the 29 May 2024 elections: 16,291,516 of 27,782,677 registered voters cast ballots, a turnout the commission reports as 58% and the lowest since 1999, with 1.10% of ballots spoilt and the result declared on 2 June 2024, four days after the close of voting. It records 110 section 55 objections decided, 85 rejected, three withdrawn and 17 upheld, producing 35 ordered recounts, and it documents two technical failures: a voters' roll application fault on the voter management devices that wrote duplicate records and congested the system on election day, and a results-leaderboard display outage from about 06h30 to 08h45 on 31 May 2024 caused by a line of test code left in an optimised data-warehouse job, which the commission states affected only the public display and not the results data. It also lists the five court cases brought against the result and reports that Real411 received 289 election-related disinformation complaints against 99 in 2019.
