Proportional representation to a 349-seat unicameral Riksdag, elected every four years on a fixed date — the second Sunday in September — at the same time as regional and municipal councils. Seats are allocated by the modified Sainte-Laguë method with a 4% national threshold.

Sweden runs one of the most administratively conventional elections in Europe: all-paper ballots, hand counting, a fixed date nobody can move, and a permanent election authority. That leaves few of the technical attack surfaces that dominate election-integrity argument elsewhere, and shifts the questions worth asking to the information environment around the campaign — and to one long-criticised feature of the polling station itself, where ballots are displayed openly and a voter's choice can be observed as they take one.

The electoral roll is drawn automatically from the population register and a voting card is posted to every elector. Voters identify themselves with a document or are vouched for by a known person. Advance voting runs for about three weeks before polling day at libraries and other public premises; postal voting is for electors abroad.

Paper ballots counted by hand at the polling station on election night, recounted in full by the county administrative boards in the days after, which is the real count of record. The Election Authority is permanent; appeals go to the Election Review Board. There is no electronic voting and no internet voting.
Wissenswertes
- Ballot papers are stacked openly on a table in the polling station, one pile per party, so which pile a voter takes can be observed. The arrangement has been criticised by OSCE/ODIHR for years as falling short of ballot secrecy; screened stands are now required but the underlying design persists.
- The election date is fixed in law rather than chosen by the government, so no prime minister can time a vote to advantage — an early election, which is rare, does not reset the four-year cycle.
