Guatemala: IACHR Urges State to Respect Constitutional Order

Inter-American Commission on Human Rights · October 4, 2023

The Commission records that on 29 September 2023 the Special Prosecutor's Office against Corruption raided the Supreme Electoral Tribunal's headquarters and removed more than 125,000 documents and original records of the general elections, the fifth such raid since the elections according to the OAS observation mission, which called it unjustified and found no factors casting doubt on the electoral results. It lists the delay of more than two weeks in announcing first-round results, the attempted suspension of Semilla's legal registration, the raid on the party's headquarters, an arrest warrant against a Citizen Registry official, and impeachment proceedings against TSE judges. It also reproduces the State of Guatemala's reply that the Public Ministry acted within the legal framework under a judge's order and that the investigation does not seek to alter the election results.
