“The UK sends £350 million a week to the EU — money that could fund the NHS instead.”
Reviewed July 27, 2026
Verdict
The figure, painted on Vote Leave's campaign bus, was a gross contribution that ignored the UK's rebate and the money the EU spends in the UK. UK Statistics Authority chair Sir David Norgrove wrote to Boris Johnson — who kept using the figure after the referendum — calling it 'a clear misuse of official statistics'. The net contribution was substantially lower.
