Civic electoral accompaniment: IDEMOE observed the national general elections of 22 October 2023

IDEMOE (Instituto de Estudios sobre Democracia y Elecciones) · November 11, 2023

IDEMOE, registered with the National Electoral Chamber as an accredited civic-accompaniment body, deployed 30 observers and experts across six districts - the City of Buenos Aires and the provinces of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Mendoza, Santa Fe and Tierra del Fuego - plus digital monitoring in La Rioja, Chubut, Misiones, Tucuman and Catamarca. It reported that more than 82% of polling stations opened between 8:00 and 8:30, that 98% of establishments handled the count well to very well, and that national participation was 77.6%, but recorded ballot shortages met with contingency ballots where a party's ballots ran out through voter volume or removal from the booth, security staff unfamiliar with the accompaniers' role, and a restriction that required its accompaniers to leave before the 18:00 close and kept them from observing the closing, the preparation of the telegramas or the polling-station count - which it described as a step back from previous elections.
