GRU 2016 Hack-and-Leak Operation
DCLeaks · Guccifer 2.0 operation
A Russian military-intelligence operation that stole material from the Democratic National Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign accounts, then released it through DCLeaks, the fictitious Guccifer 2.0 persona and intermediaries during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.
This operation is distinct from the Internet Research Agency's social-media campaign: GRU Unit 26165 conducted intrusions and stole material, while Unit 74455 helped stage and amplify releases. U.S. official investigations also documented reconnaissance against election-administration systems, but found no evidence that the operation changed vote tallies. The Intelligence Community did not assess whether Russian interference changed the election outcome.
