Chinese state media and Canadian WeChat accounts spread false narratives in Canada's 2021 election

Rapid Response Mechanism Canada, Global Affairs Canada · October 8, 2021

RRM Canada identified a coordinated campaign spreading false narratives about Conservative leader Erin O'Toole, candidate Kenny Chiu and the party's platform through WeChat, Douyin and Chinese-language media. It assessed low-to-moderate confidence that the activity may have been a PRC influence operation, identified links to PRC-aligned media, but stated that it had no clear evidence the campaign was directed by the PRC.
