Treasury sanctions Russian and Iranian entities over attempted interference in the U.S. 2024 election

OFAC designated Russia's Center for Geopolitical Expertise, its director and Iran's Cognitive Design Production Center under election-interference authorities. Treasury found that GRU-backed CGE used generative AI, manipulated video and at least 100 imitation news sites against the 2024 U.S. election, while the IRGC subsidiary planned operations to incite tensions among U.S. voters.
